How to Create FTP Connections Via Windows Browsers

An FTP connection allows you to add files to your website in order to keep your site fresh for your visitors. Knowing multiple ways to establish a connection to your server gives you options and can help you in an emergency if you are away from your computer. If you do not have access to your FTP client program or simply choose not to use one, you can establish an FTP connection to your web server from anywhere through a browser.

Instructions

      Open any browser window. Type your FTP URL into the address bar and press Enter. If do not have an address bar, click on "View" and point to "Toolbars" and then click "Address Bar" to show it.

      Type your user name and password into the fields in the "Log On As" dialogue box. You can click on the "Save password" check box to skip this screen in the future. This will open up an FTP connection into a Windows browser.

      Navigate through the folders or download files by clicking on them. Drag and drop files from your computer into the folders in your FTP connection to make these files live on the Internet.

      Close the browser window to terminate the FTP connection.

    Internet Explorer

      Open Internet Explorer. Type your FTP URL into the address bar and press "Enter."

      Type your user name and password into the fields in the "Log On As" dialog box. You can click on the "Save password" check box to skip this screen in the future. This will open up an FTP directory in Internet Explorer.

      Click on the "Page" button on the tool bar and then click on "Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer" in the drop-down menu. This will open up an FTP connection into a Windows browser.

      Click on the files to open a "File Download" prompt. Navigate through the folders by clicking. Drag and drop files from your computer into the folders in your FTP connection to post them on the Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you enter your FTP URL into the address bar, you may receive an FTP Folder Error message box telling you that it could not establish a connection to your server. You will have to add your FTP address as an exception to your firewall program or disable the firewall altogether in order to continue.
