How to Construct a Career Objective

A career objective can help focus your resume's content to particular jobs.

Writing a career objective can help you identify exactly what you are looking for in a job. Take time to think through exactly what you want out of a career. The type of position you want and the type of resume you have will play key roles in helping your construct a clear, accurate career objective.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of your strengths, skills and talents. This will help you create a career objective that clearly states what you have to offer the employer.

    • 2

Make action verbs work for you. Write your career objective by starting out with an action verb instead of "I." For example, you may want to "Manage small team of researchers. . ." instead of "I want to manage people. . ."

    • 3

Mention how you can help the company, not how the company can help you. Instead of using phrases like "to grow in the field" or "to learn more about computers," include phrases like "to further the organization's mission of. . ." or "to increase the sales department's annual sales numbers."

    • 4

Keep it concise. A one-sentence career objective is long enough.

    • 5

Use the specific job title in the career objective if you are applying for a particular job. If you are looking for work in a certain field, write the type of position you would like to have. For example, you may say that you are looking for a position as an account manager or an early childhood educator if you are not applying for a specific job. Otherwise, you might say that you are applying for the "Regional Sales Director position."

    • 6

Include the functions you want to perform in a job if your resume uses a functional format that emphasizes your work experience. If your resume focuses on your skills, incorporate the skills you hope to use in the position, and use to the advantage of the employer in the career objective.
