How do I Use Dymo Labels in a Brother Printer?

Dymo labels are pressure-sensitive labels made specifically for use in Dymo's LabelWriter printers. These printers use continuous-roll label stock; the idea is you just print a label and rip it off the printer. If you want to use these labels with a Brother label printer, you've got a problem, because Brother label stock comes in its own label spool designed to fit the printer. To use the Dymo labels, you've got to get them onto a Brother spool. It will take a while to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Used spool from Brother label stock
  • Cellophane or masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Set the Brother label spool upright on a flat surface.

    • 2

Take the end of the Dymo labels, and affix it to the hub of the Brother label spool, with the label side up.

    • 3

Wind the Dymo labels onto the Brother spool so that they are going over the top of the spool. Keep a slight amount of tension on the Dymo labels so they wind tightly onto the spool.

    • 4

Insert the label spool into the Brother label printer.

    • 5

Thread the end of the label roll below the gap in the printer's cutter unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to use a Brother label spool that's as close as possible in size to your Dymo labels.

  • Dymo labels also have to be wound onto label spools in Dymo printers; the difference is that with the Dymo, the spool stays with the printer, while in the Brother printer, the spool stays with the roll.

  • Use of non-standard stock with specialty label printers can void their warranty.

  • Improper winding of labels onto the spool can cause your printer to become jammed.

  • Never use label stock that is larger than the spool.
