How to Mount an Internal Slim DVD Mod in a Computer

Slim DVD drives are usually meant for laptops or specialty cases that are referred to as mods, which is short for modified. For the most part, you can take one of these DVD drives and install it in a regular computer, but how well it stays in the computer and how well it looks in your case depends on the drive and the amount of work you do. The drive's physical size and looks should not affect how well it works.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your computer case. Unscrew the access door from the back of the case. Lift out the access door. You may need to push a button or release.

    • 2

Remove the front panel of the case where the DVD drive will go. Because it's a slim drive, it will not take up all of the space. You may wish to cut the cover that was in place in half and use that to cover the empty space above the drive. You can alternatively use tape or just leave the space open.

Put the DVD drive in the open bay. Screw the drive into the side of the computer case. Connect the data and power cables from the motherboard to the drive. You may need a special bracket system to hold the drive in place if it does not fit in one of the bays. If the drive does not have standard power and data connections, you will have to use a cable that has the standard type for your motherboard on one end and the drive's type on the other end; this may be a smaller laptop type. The data cable from the motherboard can be either IDE or SATA. Most newer drives are SATA.

Close the computer case and screw the door back in place. Restart the computer. Windows should automatically recognize the DVD drive.

Tips & Warnings
