DIY Remove a Vinyl Window Sash
Vinyl window sashes can be removed without doing anything to the window frame, unlike many traditional wooden windows. Whether you want to remove the sash for cleaning or need to replace the sash, you can remove the sash with little effort. Vinyl window sash are designed to tilt in for cleaning and ease of removal. The top sash is removed first, followed by the bottom sash. Does this Spark an idea?

Unlock the sash lock in the center of the window where the bottom of the top sash and the top of the bottom sash meet.

Pull the bottom sash up approximately 3 inches from the bottom of the window opening.

Depress the tabs on the top corners of the bottom sash and pull the top of the bottom sash toward the interior of the house. The tabs release the top of the sash from the jamb liner.

Pivot one bottom corner of the bottom sash out of the jamb liner. The tabs on the bottom of the sash rest on a balance shoe in the jamb liner and can be lifted off.

Lift up on the remaining bottom corner of the bottom sash and remove it from the jamb liner. Guide the sash from the window opening and set it aside.

Slide the top sash down about 3 inches from the top of the window frame. Depress the tabs on the top corners of the sash and tilt the sash toward you.

Pivot one bottom corner of the sash and remove it from the jamb liner. Lift out the remaining bottom corner and guide it from the window opening.

Tips & Warnings
Take your time when removing the sashes and do not force them out.
Place the sashes in a safe place to avoid damaging them.
