All vehicles are identified using a unique 17-digit vehicle identification number, more commonly referred to as a VIN. This identification number is basically like the fingerprint of a vehicle, and displays the most important information for the vehicle, including its unique features, manufacturer and other specifications. Boat trailers also have these numbers for identification and tracking purposes, and you can identify any boat trailer by performing a search using the VIN.

Instructions

1. Visit the CARFAX website and enter the 17-digit VIN of the boat trailer into the appropriate box. Vehicle history reports are available through the CARFAX website for $24.99 as of late 2010. These reports offer in-depth information regarding the associated vehicle, including ownership history and any reported accidents or major problems with it.

2. Visit the AutoCheck website, again, relying on the VIN. Through their site you have the option of purchasing a single report for $29.99, or unlimited reports for $44.99. Information offered covers a range of important issues, including whether the trailer has ever been damaged, reported as stolen, and the names of all past owners of the boat trailer.

3. Visit the ShoreLand'r website. Enter the VIN and you are presented with an informative report -- albeit less comprehensive than the others -- regarding the trailer and its history.

Tips & Warnings

• Typically, the VIN on a boat trailer is printed on two separate stickers: One located by the right taillight and the other behind the trailer tongue on the inside of the side frame.
