Record three measurements for both the height and width and go with the smallest measurement of each to get the correct size storm window. Measure the entire window from one end to the other for the most accurate measurement.

Set the storm window into the opening from the outside of the house. Use a ladder if necessary to reach if it is high; if it is a bigger window, it may be better to have two people for this part of the job. Prop the window into the opening and ensure that it fits properly and everything is perfectly level.

    • 3

Screw the window into place. Insert three screws on each side of the window through the nailing fin. Start in the center of each side, then move on to the bottom, followed by the top. Move to the inside of the house and check that the storm window is in proper working order. Slide the window up and down to see if it is working properly.

    • 4

Caulk the inside of the window with a paintable latex caulk, using a caulk gun. Run a bead completely across the bottom of the window on the interior of the house. Continue caulking up both sides of the window. Close the bottom sash once the bottom has been caulked and open the top. Caulk up the rest of each side and across the top of the window.

    • 5

Clean up the excess caulk with a paper towel and water. Wipe the paper towel over the caulk so it is not in the way of the window and allow proper time for it to dry.
