How to Accelerate Download Speed

Your download speed is dependent on several factors, including the Internet connection speed and the overall performance of the computer. This means that a fast Internet connection is not enough to boost the download speed if the computer's performance is slow. In the same manner, a fast computer is not enough to accelerate the download speed if you have a slow Internet connection. To have a fast download speed, these factors should go hand in hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Refresh the Internet connection. To do this, reboot the computer, modem and router (if in use). If the computer is connected to a home network, turn off the other computers in the network so that the Internet connection is not divided among several computers.

    • 2

Delete temporary Internet files. If you are using Mozilla Firefox, click "Tools" and then "Clear recent history." Click the check boxes of those Internet files that you want to delete and click "Clear Now." If you are using Internet Explorer, open the Start menu and click "Control Panel," "Network and Internet," "Internet Options" and then "General" tab. Under "Browsing History," click "Delete." Click "Delete all," confirm your action and then click "OK."

    • 3

Run a virus scan in your computer. Ensure that the virus scanner you are using, whether it's the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool or third-party software, is up to date.

    • 4

Download and install a "Download Accelerator" program in your computer. Some download accelerator programs do not only increase the download speed but also help you manage your downloads (see Resources).

Tips & Warnings

  • Inquire about a service upgrade with your Internet service provider if you want a significantly faster download speed. The Internet connection speed is essentially the key to a faster download speed.
