Become a Bartender for Free

Becoming a bartender can be a rewarding career for the right type of person. Ideal candidates for bartender positions are responsible, have a friendly and outgoing personality and get along well with other people. You can become a bartender in two different ways. You can either go to a bartending school, or you can jump right in and learn on the job. While bartending school will cost you money, you can become a bartender for free by learning on the job. You'll also make some extra wages while you're at it.

Instructions

  1. Applying for the Job

    • 1

Write a good resume and cover letter. Highlight your experiences working in customer service, serving in restaurants or anything else you can think of that shows you'd make a good bartender.

    • 2

Check the local classifieds in your area for bartender openings. Go to the bars you're interested in and drop off your cover letter and resume. Some bars may also have you fill out an application in addition to your resume.

    • 3

Go to some other local bars where you feel you may like to work. Talk to the bartenders and other staff and tell them you're looking for a job. Ask if they have any suggestions, and if their bar is hiring. You can also ask to speak with the bar manager about getting a position. Networking with people in the industry is a great way to get your foot in the door.

    • 4

Leave a copy of your resume and cover letter even if the bar isn't currently hiring. You never know when an open position will become available and it helps if the bar already has your resume on file.

    Interviewing for the Job

    • 5

Dress the part when interviewing for a bartending job. The basic rule of thumb is to dress as if you already worked there.

    • 6

Make eye contact with the interviewer the entire time. A good bartender is confident and the interviewer is looking for this trait during the interview. If a person looks down, or looks away, it implies they're either really nervous, lying or lack confidence.

    • 7

Ask several questions. Asking questions shows that you're really interested in getting the job and that you're taking the initiative to see if that particular bar is the right fit for you.

    • 8

Inform the interviewer of your desire for the position. It is important that the interviewer knows that you're interested. Ask the interviewer what the next step in the hiring process is, or when you can expect to hear back from them.

    • 9

Follow up with the interviewer two to three days later. Tell them again how much you want the job and how you feel you'd be an asset to their business.
