Those shopping for a clothes dryer will find more than 250 models to choose from, with some operating on electricity and others powered by gas. While gas dryers are typically a little more expensive than electric models, "Consumer Reports" notes that they usually have lower operating costs, so you can make up the price difference over time. 1
Examine capacities. Manufacturers use cubic feet to measure the amount of laundry a gas dryer can hold. Gas dryer capacities can range from 5.7 to 8 cubic feet. "Consumer Reports" suggests extra-large sizes may only be necessary if you wish to dry large, bulky items.

2
Check features. "Consumer Reports" says buying a dryer with a moisture sensor is a must because it minimizes the chances of fabric damage from overdrying. Examine the number and types of drying cycles offered by various models, as well as the location of the lint filter and whether the door opens down or to the side. More expensive models may offer steam technology to remove wrinkles and sanitizing features to kill germs.

3
Note energy usage. The bright, yellow "Energy Star" labels affixed to appliances on the showroom floor can tell you how much you'll spend to operate the dryer over a one-year period. You can also find this information in an appliance's online listing.
-
4
Read reviews. Websites that sell clothes dryers allow customers to post reviews of the appliances. You can get independent analysis of various models by subscribing to the "Consumer Reports" website or magazine.
-
5
Think about colors. If you want a clothes dryer in a color other than white, your choices of models will be limited. Available colors include dark blue, black, turquoise, silver and red.
-
6
Price your options. Manufacturers' suggested retail prices for gas dryers started below $500 in November 2010 and climbed as high as $1,900. Consider whether you need the extra space and features offered by more expensive models.
