How to Send a Free Fax With DSL in Windows Vista Over the Internet thumbnail
Fax machines still require voice lines to transmit data.

Faxing from your house used to require either a voice modem or an actual fax machine. Windows Vista still has the options to send faxes but requires a voice line. Send faxes using your DSL internet connection by uploading the documents to an online fax server.

Instructions

    • 1

Scan your document. Save the file to a .doc format, or scan the papers and save as a .pdf format.

    • 2

Upload the file to a free, internet fax service, such as Fax Zero, MyFax, or Got Free Fax. Click "Choose File," and locate the file. Click "Open."

    • 3

Input your information in the "Sender" section, and the recipients information in the "Receiver" section. The phone numbers need to include the area code and number.

    • 4

Choose a cover page, if the option is present. Click "Send Free Fax Now." You will receive an email confirmation of the fax being sent or a failure message. The process takes 5 to 30 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • The free options are limited. Websites that offer free faxing usually offer subscription services for unlimited or premier faxing.

  • DSL modems are incapable of sending to a fax machine. You must have a wired-phone line to be able to send a fax from your computer if you choose to not use the internet fax services.
