How to Ship a Race Engine
Race engines comprise many parts, making them susceptible to damage during shipping. The key to shipping a race engine successfully is proper packaging. Because of its size, a race engine must be shipped using freight services. Many freight companies specialize in shipping engines (see Resources). These companies have expertise in handling and shipping items as large as an engine, but they rely on the shipper to package it properly.
Things You'll Need
- Wood pallet
- Wood crate
- Rope
- Cardboard, fabric or quilt
- Three-inch screws or nails
- Shipping tag
Instructions
-
-
1
Build or purchase a pallet and crate in a size that accommodates the engine. Numerous companies sell pallets and crates (see Resources).
-
2
Measure the dimensions of the crate and ascertain an approximate weight. Contact a freight company to get a quote (see Resources). It will need the dimensions and approximate weight to provide an accurate quote.
-
-
3
Remove all liquid from the engine, including water.
-
4
Attach a tag directly to the engine with the shipper's and recipient's name and address. This will allow for identification of the engine if the crate is damaged or removed during shipping.
-
5
Place the engine atop a wood pallet. Cover the engine with cardboard, fabric or a quilt. Use rope to secure the engine to the pallet. The engine should not be able to tilt or rock during transport.
-
6
Secure the wood crate to the pallet with three-inch screws or nails.
-
7
Contact the freight company to arrange for pickup. You will need the complete address of the pickup and delivery locations. Upon arrival, the freight drivers should adhere a shipping label to the crate. Ensure that this is done before the driver departs with the engine.
