How to Disable GM OnStar

OnStar provides services, which include hands-free calling, navigation, emergency crash response and vehicle recovery assistance. OnStar also has built-in devices in General Motors (GM) vehicles that require a periodic subscription fee. When your cancel your subscription, OnStar can still track your location in your vehicle using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. If you feel uncomfortable about OnStar tracking your vehicle, you can disable GM OnStar.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the trunk of your vehicle and then lift the trunk liner covering the spare tire. Remove the spare tire.

      Unscrew your trunk's plate by removing the four screws holding the cargo net together. If you do not have a cargo net holder, you can still remove the trunk's plate.

      Pull the trunk plate and the carpet liner towards the middle of the vehicle to access your OnStar device.

    • 4

      Unplug the three cables connected to your OnStar device. This will disable the GM OnStar.

    • 5

      Screw the screws in your trunk back into place and then replace the carpet liner and spare tire into your trunk and close the trunk.
