How to Use a Fluted Insert for a Springform Pan

When you want to present a picture-perfect cake, chose a springform pan. The little latch on the side of a springform pan expands the pan so you can easily lift it away from your gooey, rich treat. The sides are perfectly smooth, leaving you with an impressive-looking cake. Show off your skills even more by using a fluted insert with your springform pan to give you a pretty top to your favorite baked creation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a recipe that will benefit from a fluted top. For example, a Bundt cake or mousse will have enough body to hold the shape from the fluted form but a frosted cake will just hide under the frosting, wasting your efforts with the insert. A mousse will also take the shape well as it chills in the refrigerator.

    • 2

Place the fluted insert on a baking sheet in case of leaks and fit the open springform ring around it. Line up the groove in the ring with the edge of the insert and close the ring around the insert, locking the ring.

    • 3

Pour the batter into the pan.

    • 4

Bake or chill, as required by the recipe.

    • 5

Release the sides of the pan.

    • 6

Place a decorative plate on the food and fluted insert.

    • 7

Hold the plate and fluted insert and flip the entire setup so the plate is on the bottom.

    • 8

      Gently remove the fluted insert.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cheesecakes are the most well known use for springform pans but you can be creative. If you want to make a salmon mousse, use the fluted insert to create a beautiful presentation, adding crackers or herbs in the center of the ring.

  • When buying or using a springform pan, make sure there is a tight fit between the bottom and sides so your batter doesn't leak out. In addition, some recipes that use a springform pan also use a water bath and you don't want water soaking into your baked goods.

  • Sometimes your food will stick to the pan. Use a springform pan with a non-stick coating or add cooking spray or butter to help the food release from the pan.
