Traditional fog machines used an oil based product, however there are many down sides to oil as a fog liquid. Oil is unhealthy to inhale and creates a build up in lungs. It also leaves a slippery layer on solid surfaces when it settles. Glycerin is commonly used today in fog machines as a cleaner and healthier alternative to older versions of fog. In a fog machine, the glycerin is pushed through a heat exchanger, where it becomes a gas and is then pushed out to create a foggy effect. Does this Spark an idea?
