How to Recycle Steel-Belted Tire Metal Rings
If you have a number of metal tire rings, you should be able to recycle them quite easily. Steel, an easily recyclable metal, is the No.1 recycled material in North America, so you should have no problem finding a place to take it. Depending on where you live, you may even have your choice of several places willing to take the stuff off your hands---and pay you for your effort. Follow some specific steps to recycle the steel rings from your tires.

Locate a scrap metal dealer near you. In larger cities, you will likely find a host of scrap dealers who purchase scrap steel by the pound. Some places to start looking include city business listings and your local Bureau of Environmental Services. You can also search under "scrap metal" in Earth 911's online database (see link in Resources section).

Remove all rubber debris from your metal tire rings. If you already have the steel removed from the tire, you have already overcome a major hurdle to recycling the steel in the tire, since doing so is a difficult process. If you have any small bits of rubber left, use a knife or box cutter to remove them.

Load your materials into a truck or other vehicle, and take them to the scrap dealer of your choice. Bring along your identification. Since many states have laws requiring scrap buyers to record your personal information during the sale, you must have some kind of identification to sell metal legally. In some states, you will receive a check in the mail for the metal you sell.
