Cut the lawn in the fall using a clipping bag collector. This will keep crab grass seeds from reaching the ground and reseeding for the next year.

Rake dead crab grass areas in the spring after the winter cold to remove as much as possible.

Spread a pre-emergent crabgrass killer on your lawn in the spring before new plants sprout up. Use a lawn spreader and follow your packages application quantity suggestions for the area you need to treat.

Re-apply crabgrass killer six weeks months later, using half the quantity.

Tips & Warnings
For large patches where there is no grass, spray a weed killer on the area to kill all vegetation. Once dead, scoop up the crabgrass with a shovel and aerate the area. Wait about a week and then over seed with grass seed to match the rest of your lawn.
