Step-by-Step DVD Rip thumbnail
Ripping does not actually harm or cause damage to data written on your disc.

We all realize how vulnerable and susceptible our precious DVDs can be when it comes to scratches or damage to the data written on them. You may want to consider ripping them and storing backup files on your computer to keep your hard-earned dollars from going to waste. Ripping is a simple process that copies the audio or video from a CD and stores it on your computer's hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the DVD ripper software that you have purchased. If you do not have one yet, Download Wondershare, WinX or FreeShare DVD Ripper (see Resources). Follow the installation process and open the program once completed.

    • 2

Load the DVD into your computer, and click the button labeled "Load DVD." Not all software is the same, so look for any button indicating where the source file should originate from. In any case, the source file will be your DVD-Rom drive. Select your DVD in the appropriate drive, and then wait for your application to compile all the data.

    • 3

Configure the settings of your DVD movie file after your DVD data has been loaded. Input the information you want for the format, title and output folder. Locate the section labeled "Video Settings" or "Format" in your ripping program, and choose your desired file type from the options. If you are not sure what to choose, stick to a common extension, such as .avi or .mpeg. If you are ripping music only, select .mp3 or .wma for the audio extension format.

    • 4

Select the section titled "Output"; this may also be labeled "Destination Folder." Here, you may choose where you would like your movie to be saved on your hard drive after the ripping process has finished. You may wish to leave the output folder at the default setting, or select the browse button and choose your own destination.

    • 5

Name your output file, which you may want to change to the name of the movie. After you have customized all the desired settings, your DVD will be ready to go. Select "Start" or "Rip" on your DVD ripping software, and wait for the process to complete. Once it has finished, you may access the movie or audio file in the folder you specified in the output settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ripping your DVD is legal in the United States, as long as the intended purpose for the files is for personal use and backup only.

  • Any attempts to distribute or sell your ripped media will be subject to federal copyright laws.
