How to Add a Generator to an RV
A recreational vehicle, or RV, usually comes with many features that require a power source. When those features are used, they will pull from the RV's battery unless you attach a generator to the vehicle. Some RVs do not come with the option of attaching a generator, so you will have to install a mount as well. Mounts come in prefabricated kits that make it easy to assemble. Attaching your generator is then an easy task.
Things You'll Need
- Mounting kit
- Generator
- Screwdriver
- Clamps

1
Locate the best spot to mount your generator. The rear bumper typically works well for mounting your generator. If your RV has a mount already present, it will be listed in the owner's manual. Consult your owner's manual to locate the mount.
-
2
Assemble your purchased mount. If your RV does not have a mount included, you will have to buy one. Follow manufacturer's directions to install it securely on your vehicle.

3
Connect the fuel supply of the RV to the generator. Some vehicles may not have the option of attaching the generator to it, in that case connect it to a propane tank.
-
4
Clamp a flexible hose to the exhaust port and clamp the other end to a PVC pipe. The exhaust port is the passageway from the engine to the exhaust. Mount the pipe to the side of the RV. This will help keep exhaust away from the RV and give the generator proper ventilation.
-
5
Connect a transfer switch that goes from the AC output of the generator to the RV's power supply. The transfer switch is typically a 30-amp switch that is connected in the RV and allows you to take power from the RV or from the generator as needed.
-
6
Connect the generator to a battery that will start it without using the RV's battery.
