1
Put on your hard hat, safety goggles, steel-toed boots and gloves. Put on the ear protection to prevent hearing loss from the loud power tool. Check all hose connections to the jackhammer before powering up the tank and unit. Pick up the jackhammer pointing the bit away from your body.
-
2
Plug in the jackhammer to an electrical source, if necessary. Various jackhammers have different starting mechanisms. Follow the instructions for your particular model for starting procedures.
-
-
3
Grip the top handle of the jackhammer and place the bit --- the end of the hammer --- onto the edge of the surface to be broken. Place a firm grip on the handlebars before starting the jackhammer.
-
4
Pull the handle trigger while pushing the bit into the surface to be broken. If you're working around glass or fragile items, face the jackhammer away from them because there will be stone shards flying around.
-
5
Create a small edge by chipping away at the surface at 45-degree to 65-degree angles. Use an angle to break apart the concrete or hard surface.
-
6
Insert the bit farther into the edge after an edge has been created. Force the bit as deep into the edge as possible and continue to chip away at the surface. After pieces are broken off, turn off the jackhammer and remove the pieces to clear the area.
