How to Create an Invitation in a Hatbox
Create a memorable party invitation using a hatbox to present your engagement. This pattern requires only minimal work to put together and can be done on any color or designed card stock or craft paper. It can be used simply as is, or you can add party-specific decorations; glue small pictures of baby bonnets onto the side of the box for a baby shower or add cut-outs of fancy tea cups for an afternoon tea gathering.
Things You'll Need
- Hatbox template
- Card stock
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Decorating supplies
- Hole punch
- Fine point pen or marker
Instructions
-
Construct the Invitation Box
-
1
Select a print hat box template. Timeless Treasure Trunk offers a template that is small enough to make with one sheet of card stock. This pattern is for a five-sided gift box; however, with a few small modifications it can be turned into an invitation-holding hatbox.
-
2
Print the template. The pattern can be printed directly onto card stock that you've selected for color and design; or you can print the template and affix it to craft paper.
-
-
3
Cut out the template using sharp scissors to keep the edges straight. Separate the base of the box and the lid.
-
4
Follow the pre-made patterns on the template to assemble the box. You will not need to cut anything out on the template.
-
5
Construct the lid for the box using the pre-made lines.
-
6
Use the hole punch to make holes on opposite sides of the box. You will need to punch out the holes just under the top of the box.
-
7
Cut a 4-inch piece of ribbon, then loop the ribbon over the box by tying a small knot on the inside of each hole.
-
8
Add any embellishments such as beads or stickers.
Make the Invitation
-
9
Find a pattern for the invitation--it should be small enough to fit inside the hatbox. Consider using a gift tag template, around two to three inches.
-
10
Print the invitations; for this you can use the same color or design as the hatbox, or you can add a color or design to complement the box.
-
11
Write the party information on the invitation using a fine point pen or marker.
-
12
Place the invitation inside the hatbox and attach the lid to the top.

Tips & Warnings
Print and cut out everything at once to help the construction move faster.
Print a "test" tag first to make sure it will fit snugly inside the hatbox.
