How to Attach Loops to Tyvek

Tyvek is the durable fabric used in construction and landscaping, but even durable fabric can tear if loops are not properly attached. You can attach loops to Tyvek using canvas sewing and upholstery sewing techniques. Make sure you get a little extra Tyvek, about four inches more on each side of the Tyvek tarp, for reinforcing the edges. Use either a heavy duty or industrial sewing machine to add loops to Tyvek, because a light duty household sewing machine can be damaged by sewing through thick material. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure two inches in from the cut edge of the Tyvek. Fold the raw, or cut, edges of the Tyvek over two inches. Then make a second two inch fold to completely encase the Tyvek's cut edge.

    • 2

Set the sewing machine to make its longest straight stitch. Sew all the way around the Tyvek, 1/4 inch in from the folded edge, on both the inner fold and the outer folds.

    • 3

Fold a six inch long piece of nylon strap in half with the cut ends lined up together. Position the cut ends to overlap the stitched edge by one inch.

    • 4

Sew all the way across the strap right above the outermost line of stitching, then back-tack to the starting point. Sew through all layers of the strap and folded Tyvek fabric. Turn the Tyvek and point the needle at the center of the other edge of the one inch strap. Sew across to that point.

    • 5

Turn the Tyvek again, aim for the opposite, unattached corner of the strap. Sew in reverse to the corner of the strap. The stitching will resemble a large zigzag. Sew across the raw edge of the strap, and then back-tack the line of stitching to make sure it is secure.

    • 6

Repeat the forward and reverse stitching, making zigzag stitching lines across each strap.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add as many, or as few, loops as needed to your Tyvek tarp.

  • These directions will give you one inch loops. If you need longer loops you can cut the straps longer.
