How to Compare Rototillers

How to Compare Rototillers thumbnail
A rototiller helps you prepare soil for planting.

A rototiller is also known as a rotary tiller. It is a type of powered lawn equipment that has a basic function of tilling the soil. This helps prepare certain areas of your property to plant or to improve your landscaping and soil quality. For example, some homeowners use a rototiller to incorporate fertilizer in the soil before planting a flower or vegetable garden. Before you choose a rototiller, you should compare your options carefully. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Research the different types of rototillers to compare them. Mini rototillers are best for small jobs, such as a flower bed of approximately 300 square feet or less. These smaller rototillers can be either gas-powered or electric and typically won't cost more than about $400 as of November 2010. Larger rototillers are gas-powered and should be used for any space that's more than 300 square feet in size. Keep in mind that larger models will be more difficult to operate.

Keep your budget in mind as you shop for a new rototiller. Inexpensive models and mini rototillers can cost only a few hundred dollars, but you could pay up to a few thousand dollars for larger rototillers. Knowing what you can afford can help you narrow down which models to compare.

    • 3

Look for a rototiller that has wheels at the base. This will make transporting it around your property much easier.

    • 4

Pay close attention to the tilling width of the rototillers you're comparing. A 10-inch tilling width, for example, is adequate for a small garden. Bigger projects will benefit from a larger tilling width, which can range up to 21 inches.

    • 5

Check on the availability of replacement parts for the rototillers you're comparing. Replacement parts can be purchased from home improvement stores or from the dealer where you purchased your rototiller.
