How to Sew a Stuffed Animal iPod Case
If your children are always asking to play with your iPod or iPhone, you probably worry about keeping it protected from dropping. Children have small hands and may accidentally drop these small devices. A stuffed animal iPod case can give them a soft friend to cuddle while they use the iPod, and when you separate the animal from the device. The stuffing provides your iPod with a soft landing if it is dropped.
Things You'll Need
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Small amount of brown or black felt
- Small amount of yellow felt
- Small amount of felt in two additional colors
- Fleece of any color, about 30 inches by 30 inches
- Fleece remnant, about 15 inches by 15 inches
- Fabric marker
- Pins
- Hand needle
- Thread
Instructions
-
Making an Owl
-
1
Fold the fleece remnant in half. Place the bottom of the iPod on the fold.
-
2
Using fabric marker, draw cutting lines 1 inch from the iPod on the three sides that are not the fold. Cut out on the lines and set aside both.
-
-
3
Cut out two small circles of black or brown felt for the pupils of the owl's eyes. Set aside.
-
4
Cut two circles from each color of felt in your choice for the owl's eyes. Make each color a different size, as these will be the iris and outside of the eye. Set aside.
-
5
This is the basic shape you will want for your owl. Fold the 30-by-30 fleece in half and cut an owl shape in any size you would like. Leave a 5/8-inch seam allowance. For an owl, cut a mostly oval shape with ears on the top.
-
6
Using yellow felt, cut two feet and a beak.
-
7
Taking the fleece traced from the iPod in Step 1, hem the short sides. Sew the long sides together, then turn. This creates the sleeve for the iPod.
-
8
Put the iPod inside the sleeve and turn on the iPod. Trace where the screen is with a fabric marker, making sure not to put much pressure on the iPod. Remove the iPod and cut out the rectangle you drew for a viewing window. The iPod should fit snugly into the sleeve, so it doesn't slide out easily.
-
9
Sew the iPod sleeve, eye parts and beak onto the right side of the front of the owl. Leave the top of the iPod sleeve open so the iPod can be inserted.
-
10
Pin the right sides of the back and front of the owl together with the feet between layers. Make sure the toes face the top of the owl when you pin. This will ensure that they face the right direction when you turn the owl right-side out.
-
11
Sew around the owl, leaving a space large enough for your hand to fit inside to insert the stuffing.
-
12
Remove pins and turn the owl right-side out. Stuff with fiberfill stuffing.
-
13
Using needle and thread, sew up the open space.

Tips & Warnings
You can modify this project to make any type of animal. Just search for an image of the animal on the Internet and print a picture in the size you would like. Use this as a pattern to trace, being sure to provide a 5/8-inch seam allowance. You can also draw your own pattern for any animal you like.
Animals with simple shapes, made facing you rather than in silhouette, are best because the iPod sleeve goes on the belly of the animal.
