How to Install Closet Maid Shelving

Empty your closet. Measure the height, width and depth of the closet. If you plan to utilize the side walls of the closet, get their dimensions as well. Whatever closet hardware you use, make sure to allow room for the closet door to close.

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the closet walls, and mark their location. Although you can use anchors to hold the Closet Maid shelving on drywall or masonry, securing the brackets into studs gives you the most secure system.

Draw your closet to scale on a piece of graph paper. Indicate the locations of the studs on your drawing. Plan on placing vertical wall standards no farther than 24 inches apart. Once you have the placement of the vertical standards, you can determine the arrangement of shelving, hanger bars and other items.

Hold the horizontal hang track level on the wall where it meets the ceiling. Use a carpenter's level to measure the levelness. Use the hacksaw to cut the horizontal hang track, if necessary. Secure the hang track with #12x2-inch pan head screws. If you are installing shelving on three walls of the closet, cut the shelving to fit the back wall, and then cut the hang track to fit the sides so it butts against the track on the back wall.

Hook the vertical standards onto the hang track so they align with the wall studs. Check that the standards are plumb with the carpenter's level. Secure them to the wall with #12x2-inch pan head screws placed in the center of their length. If the vertical standard is too long, cut it with a hacksaw.

Attach shelving or other modules to the vertical standards by hooking the module in the slots while pushing down on the module. Arrange the modules according to your plan. If necessary, cut shelving and rods to fit in your closet with bolt cutters or the hacksaw.

Put end caps on every exposed wire or piece of bare metal on the Closet Maid shelving. This not only prevents you from getting hurt as you bump against the raw metal, but it also protects the closest shelving from damage.
