A simple wired router can be connected to a wireless router to expand broadband services at your home.

Having multiple routers connected to a broadband connection is not a new thing, especially if you want to add a wireless access point to your high-speed connection. Keep in mind that the routers also work as hardware firewalls and help protect your internal network from outside intrusion. Connecting the routers should not be too difficult and should only take a few minutes.

Locate an open port on the back of your wired router, which should already be connected to your broadband modem. Once you have found one, insert one end of a CAT-5 ethernet cable into it. In this example, it is connected to port 1 on the back of the router.

Locate the input jack on the back of your wireless router and insert the other end of the CAT-5 ethernet cable, from the wired router, into it. This will provide a signal to your wireless router.

Test your wireless connection by setting up a wireless network connection within your laptop or other wireless device. Once you have entered your security code for your wireless router, you should be able to browse the Internet and use email with no difficulty.

Tips & Warnings

  • This cannot be stressed enough, especially if you're working with a wireless router: Be sure to change the default passwords to something you will remember but that no one else knows. This way, should someone try to break into your wireless or wired connection, they will not be able to get past the unique username and password that you have supplied for the routers.

  • Be certain to lock down your wireless network with a 128-bit encryption. Failure to do so could leave your Internet connection open to the world or anyone driving down your street. Without encryption, your Internet connection could be used for less-than-proper Internet access, which would all trace back to you.

Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54G and a Cisco WRT54GH router. How can I connect the 2 to work as a signal expander? Is this possible?
