Tips & Warnings
Stains come in many types, including gel, liquid and wipe. Stains provide the color for your window, and a clear finish provides protection. Home Depot recommends using gel stain for fiberglasss windows such as EverWood®, followed by a polyurethane.
Check with the stain manufacturer for recommended room temperatures.
Provide good lighting to your work area so you can notice any runs, drips or missed spots.
Stir the stain occasionally while you are working.
To keep your window looking beautiful, apply a new coat of protective clear finish every one to two years.
There is no need to sand fiberglass windows either before beginning the project or between coats.
"Stirred, not shaken" is good advice to follow when mixing your stain. Shaking adds bubbles that can mar the stain's finish, and stain that hasn't been properly stirred can result in an uneven finish.
To avoid sticking, keep the window open during the drying process.
Be safe. Wear protective gloves, and ensure that you have adequate ventilation.
