How to Make a Sculpted Baby Cake
Making a sculpted baby cake is easier than many people think. The body and the head of the baby are the only parts of the baby made from cake. The rest of the baby is formed from colored fondant. You can make the baby as detailed or as simple as you wish. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Six sheet cakes
- Serving tray
- Frosting knife
- Thin knife
- Buttercream frosting
- Rolling pin
- Fondant in white, yellow and flesh tones
- Fondant in blue or pink, depending on the gender of the baby
- Small paintbrushes
- Edible paint

Place one sheet cake onto a large serving tray. Ice the top of the cake and add another layer. Build up four layers of cake. Make an elongated oval shape out of the cake layers.

Build a circle from cake on top of the oval shape for the baby's head. The head circle should be six layers high. Round the head and body shapes to make the basic head and body shape with the thin knife. Carve out an indentation in the cake for the baby's eye sockets.

Refrigerate the cake for several hours. Frost the entire cake with buttercream frosting.

Break off small pieces of yellow fondant. Press the pieces against the baby's head to create cheeks, a chin, lips and the baby's nose. Press some pieces into the eye sockets to create the start for the eyes.

Roll out a thin layer of yellow fondant. Lay the fondant over the baby's face and body. Tuck the fondant in around the cake and press into place with your fingers. Press the fondant in around the baby's face to make it look more realistic. Use the back end of a paintbrush to create indentations for the eye sockets, mouth, chin and nostrils.

Roll out some flesh-colored fondant and lay it over the baby's head. Add details with the back of a paintbrush to create a baby doll face.

Make tubes of flesh-colored fondant for the baby's arms and legs. Use smaller pieces of fondant to make fingers and toes. Brush water on the pieces of fondant to attach them to the body.

Ice the bottom of the baby. Place some of the leftover pieces of cake on the iced portion of the baby to make a diaper. Cover the cake in white fondant. Make sure the legs stick out from the diapered area of the baby.

Paint on any additional details for the baby, such as hair, cheeks, eyes and lips with edible paint.

Cover the torso of the baby with a piece of blue or pink fondant. Fold the fondant to represent a blanket laid over the baby.
