How to Switch Home Computers for an iPhone

Your home computer typically is the primary hard drive that you use to synchronize your iPhone, and can only synchronize to one hard drive at a time, according to Apple. When moving your iPhone to a new computer, you must restore the iPhone on the new computer, which resets the device's configuration settings and syncs it with the iTunes library on the new computer. During this switch, your iPhone's current content will be erased and reverted to the original configuration settings.

Instructions

1. Plug the USB cable into the iPhone's dock and into the computer's USB port.

2. Open iTunes on the new computer, and install the latest software update for the program (see Resources).

3. Click "iPhone" or the device's name in the iTunes' side panel, and click the "Summary" tab. Click "Restore" and click "Back up" to save your current settings prior to erasing the iPhone.

4. Click the "Restore and Update" button, and wait for iTunes to run the restore utility. Click the backup name in the iPhone setup assistant, and click "Continue" to restore the backed up content.

5. Click "Controls" and "Eject" after the backup finishes.
