There are ways to improve the function of the right side of the brain.

The left brain is the logical portion of the brain that's focused on facts, names and numbers. In contrast, the right side of the brain sees reality in a more intuitive and holistic manner. It's also the creative center of the brain where the imagination dominates. Unfortunately, traditional education focuses on developing left-sided thinking skills rather than the more intuitive right brain. Fortunately, there are ways to improve the function of the right side of the brain.

Instructions

    • 1

Write with your non-dominant hand. If you normally write with your right hand, spend 15 minutes a day writing with your left hand. When writing with your left hand, it forces the right brain to play a more active role.

    • 2

Make an art collage. Collect images from magazines and glue them on a piece of heavy construction paper to create a pleasing piece of art. Creating a collage frees up the right brain better than drawing since you don't have to stay within the lines.

    • 3

Listen to music without words to improve the function of the right brain. Close your eyes and concentrate on the melody, and "visualize" the sounds in your mind.

    • 4

Create abstract art. Paint abstract shapes and colors on a canvas without censoring what you're creating. Let your intuitive right brain guide you rather than the more logical left brain.

    • 5

Act out what you're feeling with movements and expressions rather than words while standing before a mirror. Take a dance or drama class, and learn to express yourself through movements.

    • 6

Do online brain exercises designed to improve right brain function. Use sites such as Luminosity.com.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do at least one right brain exercise every day.

  • Spend more time around artsy people rather than logical, left brain types.

  • Be open to new foods and novel experiences.
