How to Store Peony Bulbs

After several years of growth, peonies may become overcrowded and benefit from dividing. While the bulbs can be divided and replanted immediately, the bulbs and plant can be saved for a later time or passed along to a friend. Keep the bulbs in storage until the optimal planting time, which for peonies is early to mid-fall. Planting at this time gives the peonies a chance to become established before cold weather arrives.

Things You'll Need

• Shovel
• Sharp knife
• Basket or bucket

Instructions

1. Gently unearth peony bulbs, using a shovel. For best results, wait until after several frosts have left the peony dormant for the season.

2. Remove foliage that remains on the bulbs.

3. Shake the bulbs gently to remove as much soil as possible. Wash the bulbs in tap water and divide them, using a sharp knife, leaving between three and five buds on each section of the bulb. Don't wash bulbs that are not going to be divided.

4. Place the bulbs in a basket or bucket in a storage area that will remain above freezing but below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Dampness, warmth and light can lead to root rot or the bulbs sprouting and attempting to grow.

Tips & Warnings

• Check the bulbs frequently. Plant any bulbs that develop eyes as soon as possible.
