How to Remove a Front Bumper From a Ford Windstar

by Kirk Maltbee

Automotive giant Ford introduced the Windstar model of minivan in 1995 as way for customers to safely transport their families in style. Like all vehicles, though, the Windstar may be in need of some TLC, and in some cases the front bumper may need to be removed to either be replaced or to gain access to the headlights. In doing so, keep in mind that since the bumper is essentially molded to the vehicle, caution must be exercised to not accidentally deploy the airbags.

Step 1

Turn the ignition to off. Chock the wheels and set the parking brake for safety's sake. Prop open the hood and use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove each connection leading to the battery, again for safety's sake, as this will deactivate the airbag sensors and prevent deployment.

Step 2

Slide the jack under the center point of the front axle and elevate the Windstar's front end until the front wheels are about two inches from the ground. Lie on the ground on your back, underneath the frontend, and use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove each screw on the bumper's underside.

Step 3

Remove each sidelight by unscrewing the attached nuts with an appropriately sized socket wrench (the size may vary according to what model year you own). Unscrew each recessed screw on either side of the bumper and pull firmly outward to dislodge the bumper. Once it's loose, locate the headlight wires and unplug each one to free the bumper from the front end.
