A cell phone's IMEI number identifies it on a cell phone network.

An International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a 15- or 17-digit number that identifies a cell phone to the cell phone's network. It uniquely identifies a phone and can be used to stop unauthorized people from making calls on a phone if it is stolen. The IMEI number is stored inside the phone's hardware, although you can find the number on one of three primary places on the phone.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the back of the phone. The IMEI may be engraved on the back metal case.

    • 2

Check the outside of the box in which the phone was packed when purchased.

    • 3

Turn off the phone, then remove the battery. Look for the IMEI number on a sticker on the back of the battery or below the battery.

    • 4

Dial *#06# on the handset to retrieve the phone's IMEI number. This may not work on all models. For example, the sequence to find the IMEI on a Sony Ericsson mobile phone is to push the following keys: right, *, left, left, *, left, *, left.

Tips & Warnings

  • Power off the phone before removing the battery to avoid possible electric shock.
