DIY Hippie Headband
As a nod to casual 1960s style, hippie headbands can be worn across the forehead or upper brow on both good hair days and bad ones. When making your own headband, use materials that were readily available during that time, including leather and beads. You might also want to top off the look with a tie-dye T-shirt and flared jeans. Or you can add the accessory to a contemporary look for a bit of bohemian flair. Does this Spark an idea?

Leather Headband
-
1
Measure two strands of flat leather laces to 36 inches long and and no more than half an inch wide. They can be any color of your choice.
-
2
Wrap the two strands of leather around your head where you will wear the headband. Make sure the middle of the length of the laces is at the center of your forehead, or in line with the nose.
-
-
3
Count out the amount of beads you'll be using for the headband and divide them into two equal groups. The beads are used only to give weight to the leather laces, so you will not need very many.
-
4
String half of the beads onto the leather laces as if they are one lace. Secure the laces with a single knot at the end so the beads do not fall off. Do the same at the other end, making sure the laces are pulled evenly so neither one appears longer than the other.
-
5
Secure the loose ends of beaded leather in a bow at the back of the head, so the ends hang loosely along with the length of the hair.
Floral Headband
-
6
Use the tape measure to find the distance around your head in the place where you where the headband. Then add to that measure an extra 10 inches so you can tie the fabric in a bow at the back of your head to secure it.
-
7
Cut a strip of floral fabric that measures the length you calculated, including the extra 10 inches. It should be no more than 2 inches wide. If you are able to get more than one band out of your fabric, you could give headbands to your friends as gifts.
-
8
Iron over the fabric on both sides so it has a finished look. If you want, you can finish the raw edges by sewing a ¼-inch hem all the way around.
