How to Identify a Dodge HEMI Engine
The Dodge/Chrysler Hemi engine, so named for its hemispherical-shaped combustion chamber, is highly sought after by car collectors and enthusiasts. Introduced in the early 1960s under the Chrysler brand, the Hemi engine was marketed as a performance engine and was available on many classic muscle cars throughout the '60s and '70s. Identifying a Hemi engine requires a list of engine codes and dates and some basic knowledge about where to look for specific markings on the engine block, intake manifold and heads.

Obtain an engine code list for Dodge/Chrysler Hemi engines. These code lists are found online on many Dodge enthusiast websites and should include casting numbers, engine stamp codes and date codes specific to Hemi engines.

Locate the casting number on the side of the engine block. Usually seven or more digits, the casting number identifies the specific displacement of the engine. Check these numbers against your Hemi engine code list.

Locate the engine stamping code, near the distributor base on the driver's side of the engine. Check this code against your engine code list. Since the engine stamping code is hand-stamped, some cleaning of the area may be required to read it clearly.

Locate the date code on the engine block. This code may be stamped in one of several locations and is written in a "month.date.year." format.
