In addition to being useful for instant messages to others online, Windows Live Messenger can be used to send Simple Message Service (SMS), or text, messages to people not online. After you send an SMS message, the other person will receive the text on his mobile phone.

Instructions

      Double-click the Windows Live Messenger icon to launch the application. Alternatively, click the Windows Live quick-launch icon on the Windows taskbar to start the program.

      Log in to your Windows Live account by entering your user name and password, then click the "Sign in" button. Wait for Windows Live Messenger to launch the application and load your contact list.

      Click the contact name for the person to whom you want to send an SMS message, then right-click the person's name and click "Edit Contact" on the pop-up menu. Wait for your Web browser to open a new tab and go to the person's contact information page.

      Enter the contact's mobile phone number in the "Mobile Phone" field, then click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

      Maximize the Windows Live Messenger window again. Right-click the person's name, then click the "Send text message" link. After the message window opens, type your message and press the "Enter" key. If Windows Live Messenger displays a confirmation message, click the "OK" button. Windows Live Messenger sends the text message immediately to the recipient's mobile phone.
