Recovering your notebook erases the hard drive and restores the factory settings.

Recovering the IBM ThinkPad T23 notebook erases the hard drive and restores it to its factory settings. This not only gets rid of old files and programs that are taking up space and could be slowing down your computer, but it removes viruses that are difficult to delete. You should recover your notebook before giving it to a friend or a family member or selling it to another individual.

Instructions

  1. Recover Using Recovery Partition

    • 1

Restart the laptop or turn on the power, then press the "F11" key repeatedly while the laptop is booting until you arrive at the Main Menu screen. If you are not redirected to the Main Menu screen, let the computer boot to the Windows startup screen, restart the laptop and repeat this process until you arrive at the Main Menu screen.

    • 2

Highlight "Recover Windows 2000, or change your operating system to Windows 2000" using the keyboard arrow keys if your notebook came with the Windows 2000 operating system pre-installed, then press "Enter." Highlight "Recover Windows NT 4.0, or change your operating system to Windows NT 4.0" if your notebook came with Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed, then press "Enter." You will be taken to a main menu screen. If your notebook came with Windows XP preinstalled, you will arrive at the main menu automatically.

    • 3

Highlight either "Full Recovery" or "Partial Recovery" using the arrow keys on the keyboard and press "Enter." A full recovery will format the hard drive and install the operating system, drivers and pre-installed applications that came with the notebook. A partial recovery will format the hard drive and install only the operating system and drivers. After you press "Enter," the recovery process will begin. When the process is finished, the notebook automatically will restart and will boot up to the Windows Setup screen.

    Recover Using Recovery CD

    • 4

Restart or turn on the notebook. Hold the "F1" key down while the notebook boots, then release the key when the IBM logo appears on the screen. This will redirect you to the IBM BIOS Setup Utility.

    • 5

Highlight "Startup" using the arrow keys on the keyboard and press "Enter," then highlight "Boot" and press "Enter," then highlight "CD-ROM Drive" and press "F6" until "CD-ROM Drive" appears at the top of the Boot Menu.

    • 6

Place the recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive, then press "F10" to save your IBM BIOS Utility changes and exit the IBM BIOS Utility program. Highlight "Yes" and press "Enter" to verify your changes. The notebook will restart and boot from the CD-ROM drive.

    • 7

Highlight "Full Recovery" or "Partial Recovery" using the arrow keys on the keyboard and press "Enter" to begin the recovery process. A message appears on the screen telling you when the recovery process is finished. Eject and remove the recovery disc and press "Enter" to restart the notebook. The notebook will boot to the Windows Setup screen, where you can personalize your edition of Windows.
