Vehicle maintenance is important for keeping your vehicle out of the shop.

The 2002 Kia Sportage has several warning sensors in the dashboard display to alert the driver of different issues with the vehicle. Most problems detected by sensors are easily addressed. Examples include the low fuel level warning sensor, which is solved by adding fuel and the door ajar warning sensor, which is remedied by securely closing all doors. Only the check engine light sensor cannot be cleared by directly addressing the problem. This sensor indicates that the vehicle's onboard diagnostic system has sensed a problem and has an error message which must be read by an OBD II reader. An onboard diagnostic system with a connector for an OBD II reader is required in all vehicle models produced since 1996.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the Sportage's data link connector (DLC). The DLC is used to connect the OBD II reader to the onboard diagnostic system. The DLC is located at the bottom of the dash, below and to the right of the steering wheel.

    • 2

Turn the Sportage ignition key to the "On" position. This powers the onboard diagnostic system. Plug the OBD II reader's connector into the Sportage's DLC. Turn on the OBD II reader.

    • 3

Follow the OBD II reader's instructions to retrieve the messages and codes from the onboard diagnostic system. Identify problems by researching codes on the OBD Code website (see Resources).

    • 4

Follow the OBD II instructions to erase existing error messages. Methods of erasing codes may vary, although they may include pressing an "Erase Codes" button, or erasing codes through menu options.

    • 5

Disconnect the OBD II reader after clearing the messages.

Tips & Warnings

  • To permanently delete a sensor message, you must fix the problem that triggered the sensor. If it is not fixed, the check engine light sensor light continue to illuminate after driving the vehicle.

  • Many repair shops and auto parts stores will use their own OBD II readers on your Sportage to retrieve and clear the messages for free.
