How to Make a Crown Canopy for a Crib
Creating a comfortable space that is both soothing and stimulating for a newborn baby doesn't have to be costly. Adding a crown canopy to the baby's crib ties the entire room together. The fabrics and colors of the canopy can reflect the curtain, crib bedding and paint choices used in the baby's room. A variety of fabrics and trims can also be added to the crown canopy to follow any room theme or decor. As the child grows, the canopy can add a stylish element to a youth bed or child's play corner as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1
Lay the hula hoop on the ground. Measure the distance all the way around the hoop and add 6 inches. Cut a 7-inch-wide piece of velour the length of the above measurement.
-
2
Place the velour strip right-side out lengthwise on the hula hoop. Overlap the fabric edges 1/2 inch and glue them together. Evenly distribute the gathered fabric around the hoop, overlapping and gluing the fabric ends together.

3
Measure the height of the round food tent from the base of the hanging hook to the bottom edge. Add 8 inches to this measurement. Cut a 36-inch-wide piece of sateen the length of the above measurement.
-
4
Place the fabric right-side up and pin the top and bottom long edges under 2 inches. Sew a 1 3/4-inch hem on the top and bottom edges. Fold the fabric over widthwise wrong-side out. Match the short edges together and sew a 5/8-inch seam down the side.
-
5
Place the round food tent on a table in its full upright position. Pull the sateen fabric over it, right-side out, 2 inches below the bottom edge of the tent. Push the hula hoop over the fabric until it reaches the bottom edge of the tent.
-
6
Distribute the gathered fabric evenly around the tent under the hula hoop. Hot-glue the hoop fabric directly to the sateen fabric, making sure to hide the hoop seam toward the back of the hoop. Place the embroidery hoop over the top of the food tent.
-
7
Gather the top hem of the sateen fabric evenly around the embroidery hoop, 2 inches below the top of the fabric. Hold this in place by stretching a rubber band around the fabric and embroidery hoop. Hot-glue the fabric to the embroidery hoop and remove the rubber band.
-
8
Measure the distance from the floor to the hoop of the food tent at its desired hanging height. Add 2 inches to the measurement. Measure two-thirds of the distance around the hoop and add 20 inches.
-
9
Cut widths of sheer fabric based on the length from the floor determined in Step 8. Sew the fabric edges together lengthwise based on the measurement around the hoop from Step 8. Calculate 5/8-inch seam allowances.
-
10
Turn the bottom edge of the sheer fabric under and sew a 1-inch hem. Repeat this step along the two side edges as well. Gather the sheer fabric right-side out and hot-glue the top edge to the inside bottom edge of the food tent.
-
11
Mark the desired location for the screw-in hanging hook on the ceiling. Screw in the hanging hook securely. Attach an S-hook through the ring at the top of the food tent.
-
12
Double a piece of fabric ribbon and hang the loop over the ceiling hook. Extend the loop downward to the desired hanging height of the S-hook attached to the food tent. Attach the ribbon to the top of the S-hook, tie a bow and hot-glue it from behind for permanence.
