1
Decide what your primary use of the automotive battery charger will be. If you are purchasing one for personal use, a small, portable one would be most effective. A charger for use in an automotive shop can be larger and store more power. The space you have available is also be a consideration. Chargers can be wall mounted or be on the floor with wheels.

2
Pay attention to sales at auto part stores. Typically, batteries have trouble starting in extreme temperatures, so hot summers and cold winters require the use of chargers more often. This is usually when battery chargers will go on sale.

Look for brand-name chargers. While generic brands may be less expensive, they generally are not as reliable as a brand-name charger. When your battery needs charging, the dependability of the charger is very important so that you do not become stranded. Some common brands are Die-Hard, Craftsman and Snap-on.

Make sure that the charger you use has a setting that will give your battery a larger initial boost, called the jump start setting. The larger boost will give your battery some additional charge so you can start your car without another vehicle. If your portable charger does not have a jump start setting, invest in a battery jumper pack that can be carried in your car in case your car needs a jump.
