How to Obtain a DJ License

How to Obtain a DJ License thumbnail
DJs supply music for many types of events.

A DJ, or disc jockey, plays recorded music for special events, at clubs, and in other situations that call for music. Some DJs broadcast music from their homes via the Internet. The DJ must legally purchase the music, and must be legally authorized to play it for others.

A DJ must obtain a license to earn money playing copyrighted music for others in both public and private venues. A license helps protect the DJ from accusations of music piracy.

If self-employed, a DJ is considered a small business owner, and should obtain a license to operate a small business.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of places where you will be playing music. Public venues require a DJ license. Private venues require a license if you earn money performing as a DJ.

    • 2

Visit the U.S. Small Business Administration website. This site lets you select your state and find the address of your nearest SBA office.

    • 3

Go to your local SBA office and fill out the appropriate paperwork. You must produce your Social Security number or Tax Identification Number. You'll also pay fees, depending on the state where you apply.

    • 4

Wait for your license to arrive in the mail. This will take several weeks. Once the license arrives, you can begin working as a DJ. If you do not work for a company, you must pay your own taxes, so keep track of your earnings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Arrive at the Small Business Administration office with complete information about your business. This will speed the process.
