How to Extract Explorer.exe From the Win98 CD

Windows 98 includes a vital system file called "Explorer.exe" that controls many of the functions of your operating system. Unfortunately, viruses and other system errors can cause this file to become corrupt. As long as you have your Windows 98 CD-ROM, replacing a corrupt Explorer.exe file only requires extracting it from where it is archived on the disc. To do this you need to execute a command from the Windows 98 Command Prompt.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your Windows 98 CD-ROM into your computer's optical drive.

    • 2

Click "Start" and then click "Run." Type "cmd" (no quotes) and press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.

    • 3

Type the command "EXTRACT /A D:\WIN98\WIN98_22.CAB explorer.exe /L C:\windows" (no quotes), where "D:\" is assumed to be the call letter of your CD-ROM; if you use a different call letter for your optical drive, replace "D:\" as appropriate.

    • 4

Allow the system to overwrite any current files. Remove the Windows 98 CD-ROM from the CD drive. Reboot your system after extracting Explorer.exe to ensure that the system works properly after the extraction.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a backup of your Explorer.exe file before extracting a new one.
