How to Register a Coat of Arms

How to Register a Coat of Arms thumbnail
Register your coat of arms with your country of origin.

A coat of arms can be registered with your home country. This will ensure that your family's coat of arms will be kept in the records. Unfortunately, just registering your coat of arms does not give you sole rights to it. If you commission an artist to create a new coat of arms for your family, it could possibly belong to the artist unless you agree to buy the rights.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your country of origin's heraldic website.

    • 2

Research the components of a coat of arms and ensure you have all of the right symbols included in yours. Also, ensure that you do not have any disallowed symbols.

    • 3

Research the forms and information you need to send in order to receive armorial bearings. In Canada, you need to send in an information form, proof of Canadian citizenship, a biographical outline that tells of your education and employment details as well as your volunteer service details, and the contact information for two people who can be contacted as references.

    • 4

Send in the information that is required to register your coat of arms.
