How to Do a Scavenger Hunt for Kids to Find a Pet
Surprise your kids with a scavenger hunt that leads to a new pet. Build up the anticipation by having kids follow clues strategically placed around the house and yard. Keep in mind the age of your children as well as the time needed to complete the scavenger hunt. Ideally, kids should complete the scavenger hunt in a fairly short amount of time, as some types of pets are noisier than others and might give away the surprise.
Instructions
-
-
1
Purchase a variety of pet accessories such as a collar, feeding dish, water bottle, treats or toys.
-
2
Purchase a pet and prepare its cage or tank if necessary.
-
-
3
Hide the pet in a location that your kids do not usually enter, such as a master bedroom, a garden shed or a laundry room. Make sure the animal has plenty of air, light and warmth while it is in hiding.
-
4
Write a short riddle describing the pet's hiding place. For example, a riddle for a pet hiding in a laundry room might read, "Go to the place where socks are washed, then tossed, and sometimes lost." To send your kids to the shed, write "Go outside, then straight ahead. Look for something in the shed."
-
5
Attach the clue to one of the pet accessories using a staple, paperclip, rubber band or piece of string.
-
6
Hide the accessory in a location away from the pet.
-
7
Write another riddle describing the location of the accessory.
-
8
Attach the second clue to a second accessory and hide it.
-
9
Continue writing clues, attaching them to accessories and hiding them in various locations around the house and yard.
-
10
Seal the last clue in an envelope and give it to your kids. The children must solve this riddle to find the first pet accessory and the next clue. Children follow the clues to find the accessories that lead up to finding the new pet.
