How to Create a Bar Graph From a Table With Tally Marks
Being able to transfer data from one form to another is a necessary skill to have as data can appear different under certain conditions. If you have a table that has tally marks on it, you will often be asked to change it to a bar graph. This is because bar graphs often look nicer and are neater in appearance than tally marks. Performing this task is very easy once you get the hang of it.

1
Look at your table with the tally marks and determine how you are going to organize your information. Normally, the tally marks will be converted into the bars on the graph.
-
2
Prepare your bar graph by using the ruler to create straight lines for the x and y-axis. The x-axis is the line that goes left and right while the y-axis is the line that goes up and down. Both lines should meet to form a corner.

-
3
Label both of these axes. For instance, if you are making a graph of the amount of pizza slices eaten by students, the y-axis will be the number of slices eaten while the x-axis will be the individual students.
-
4
Count the highest amount of tally marks you have in the table. Make this number the highest number on your y-axis.
-
5
Count the number of data groups you have and make intervals for them on the x-axis. Label them as well.
-
6
Count the numbers of each data group or row from the tally table. Make a dash above their sections in the bar graph for the number of tallies. To continue the example from before: if you counted four pizza slices from student Alex, then you will go over to your bar graph and make a dash at the number four on the y-axis. Do this directly above where you wrote Alex's name. Repeat for every data group.
-
7
Draw lines connecting the dashes down to the x-axis, creating bars.
-
8
Color in the bars to give the bar graph some color.
-
9
Give your bar graph an appropriate title at the top.
