How to Live in Campus Family Housing

Family housing makes it easy for spouses who are enrolled at a university to live on campus or, in most cases, within walking distance. Family-style apartments are designed for students who are married with or without children. If you've ever lived in an apartment, you'll find that the family-style apartments available on college campuses are largely the same. With a few options available on most major college campuses, you should be able to find the right accommodation for your family's needs.

Instructions

    • 1

University apartments for married students or students with a domestic partner are available on most major college campuses. Typically, spaces are limited so apply as far ahead of the housing application deadline as possible and consider applying early decision--a designated period ahead of the college's normal admission dates during which you can also apply for admission and housing.

    • 2

Contact the college and check that you comply with eligibility requirements. For example, comply with registration requirements for enrollment and confirm that you have at least 50 percent custody of your children. Eligibility requirements may vary by university.

    • 3

Complete a housing application in its entirety on time. Standard applications may inquire about you and your spouse's smoking habits. I may ask whether you own pets or request that you to list the total number of adults and minor children who will be living in the apartment. You may also need to identify the apartment location you and your family most prefer, especially if multiple locations are available.

    • 4

Determine how many bedrooms your family requires. Choose among one, two or three bedroom apartments. Ask about furnishings and the number of beds assigned to each bedroom. For example, bunk beds offer an effective way to scale down spacing needs.

    • 5

Inquire about rental rates. Compare rates based against the location of the apartment building, the number of available bedrooms and the style of furnishings inside the apartment. Ask if the rental rate includes utilities and a parking space. Phone service is rarely included.

    • 6

Obtain a local map and mark nearby medical facilities, schools, churches, grocery stores, laundry facilities, playgrounds and parks. Contact the student life department about on-campus amenities as well. A local directory can assist you in finding local destinations.

    • 7

Arrange your class schedule around the needs of your family. For example, enroll in a day class if you have school age children. Take advantage of night classes if your spouse is enrolled in day classes and you want at least one parent to be at home with toddlers.
