How to Insulate a Beer Line

Insulating beer lines will keep your beer cold and maintain flavor.

When installing a kegerator, tap system or beer-distributing system, it is critical that the lines transporting the beer are well-insulated. Even if the lines are within a refrigerated area, insulating the lines will help to maintain the quality of the beer. Beer lines can range from being only a few feet long in an at-home system to being a few hundred feet long in a restaurant or bar. The longer the beer lines, the more chance there is for the beer to get warm and go bad. Insulating the lines will keep your beer from going bad.

Things You'll Need

• Beer lines
• Foil
• Foam tubing
• Tape

Instructions

1. Find the lines that transfer the beer from the keg to the tap.

2. Wrap a layer of aluminum foil around the beer lines. This will help the beer to stay cold cold by transferring its cool temperature to the foil, which makes the foil cold, which in turn helps the beer retain its cold temperature.

3. Slide the foam tubing over the total length of the beer line. If needed, the tubing can be cut to fit onto the beer line. This will keep the cold temperature in and keep the warm temperature out.

4. Tape the foam insulation, so it is secure and stays in place.

Tips & Warnings

• If the area where your beer lines are has enough room, a spray foam can be used to insulate the lines.

• Be sure also to insulate the hole that the beer lines come from, using pieces of foam or spray foam. This will keep your refrigerating system at a cool constant temperature.
