How to Put a Tundra Truck in 4 Lo

Four-wheel drive low is the four-wheel drive setting reserved for serious off-road driving. In situations when you simply need extra traction, four-wheel drive high works fine. To move your Toyota Tundra's transfer case into four-wheel drive low (4L), you'll need to first move the transfer case to four-wheel drive high. You cannot switch directly from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive low.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your Tundra at a speed less than 62 mph. While driving, turn the four-wheel drive selection knob from "2H" to "4H." This knob is located to the left of the steering wheel.

    • 2

Stop the Tundra completely. Move the gearshift to "Neutral," and place your foot on the brake.

    • 3

Turn the four-wheel drive selection switch one full turn counterclockwise, until you arrive at "4L."

    • 4

Hold the switch in place until the "4L" light in your instrument cluster comes on.

    • 5

Move the gear selector back to "Drive," and begin driving.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must be at a stop to switch back to "4H" from "4L." You almost must be driving less than 62 mph to switch back to "2H" from "4H."
