How to Replace the Turn Signal Flasher in a 1991 Mazda

Mazda engineered the company lineup of vehicles, following standard design elements, regarding the turn signal. The battery routes power through the ignition switch to the turn signal relay, or flasher, and on to the turn signal. The different models have slightly different layouts for the location of the elements. However, replacing the turn signal flasher in any Mazda will follow the same process, since the flasher is located in relatively the same spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the dash display. The display has screws in the top. Use a screwdriver to remove these, and pull the display out of the way.

    • 2

Reach behind the display, and pull out the flasher. Some models locate the flasher on the steering column. Others locate the relay directly behind the display panel. The relay is a small cylinder about one-inch in diameter.

    • 3

Insert the new relay into the housing. Replace the dash display and screws. Start the vehicle, and test the turn signals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Mazda's allow you to access the turn signal flasher, by reaching under the dash, without having to remove the dash display. Look beneath the dash with a flashlight, along the steering column. The models that allow this have the flasher on the driver's side of the steering column, approximately even with the fuse panel.
