How to Measure Respirations
Respiration rates are the number of breaths you take each minute. One respiration rate equals one "in" breath and one "out" breath. Respiration rates change when you are at rest or doing a physical activity. Respiration can also change if you live or travel in higher altitudes. Unfortunately, poor habits such as smoking can have an effect on your respiration rate. If you want to monitor your respiration, use a calculator and stopwatch.

1
Measure your respiration rate at rest or after a physical activity, according to PASCO Respiration Rate. If you want to measure it while at rest, make sure you aren't doing anything strenuous.
-
2
Set a clock or stopwatch for two minutes. Breathe in and out normally, and count the number of respirations -- the in and out breaths you take. Repeat this three times.
-
-
3
Add up the number of times on your calculator. Divide that number by three.
-
4
Divide the last number by two. This is your average number of breaths per minute, or your respiration rate.
